The Correct Way to Use Sunscreen

A key aspect to skin protection is the use of a sunscreen. Sunscreens create a barrier that prevents the absorption of harmful UV rays. However, every so often, sunscreens are incorrectly or inadequately applied and this can be bad for your skin.

Here are a few points to keep in mind when using sunscreen:

  • You should use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher if spending time indoors and SPF 30 or higher if spending extended period outdoors.
  • A good sunscreen should be broad spectrum i.e. it should protect against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Water resistant sunscreens are good since it is more likely to stay effective through water and/or sweat.
  • You should use approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin. This is approximately two tablespoons.
  • Remember to apply sunscreen on the tips and back of the ears, exposed scalp, back of the neck, around the eyes, and the tops of the hands and feet.
  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to going outdoors. Once outdoors, remember to reapply sunscreen every 1-2 hours.
  • Wear a sunscreen irrespective of the location or cloudiness. UV rays can come through windows and clouds.
